The Rhythms of Daily Life
The life of an entrepreneur is not always glamorous. There are moments of sheer delight and excitement. There may even be whole days or weeks like that. Much of the journey, however, is simple persistence, doing the things that need to be done each day. And when the business is small, the business owner is doing much of it alone.
Lately, I have been working on having a good rhythm to my days and weeks so that I can keep going effectively on the stretches that are more persistence and less glamour. Any journey requires preparation. And then there’s the journey itself. There is also a need for rejuvenation. This is the other twelve hours when work fades into the background.
It may simply be the twenty-four-hour rhythm of day and night. That is important, and it is worthwhile considering how I am spending my non-work hours. How am I investing in myself and my relationships? Am I making time for rejuvenation?
Then there are the longer rhythms. Whole days devoted to a particular focus – preparation, productivity, or rejuvenation – so that all these things are built into my week. This is the rhythm I am working on currently. I tend to aim for productivity every day at the expense of other important aspects of my schedule that are necessary to feed productivity and maximize my efforts.
There are no stock answers. Being an entrepreneur involves a lot of trial and error. A key for me is finding a schedule that works for now, but also holding it lightly and shifting as needed to match my objectives.
